What is the reason for all these LGMs getting so close to $$$4000$$$? Is there rating inflation happening at the top?
Also, why did you reserve the word $$$legend$$$ for $$$4000+$$$? I thought that $$$3000+$$$ signifies legendary status, unless the ratings are being inflated or whoever created the title names uses extreme adjectives too liberally. Chess only has like $$$30$$$ super grandmasters, and chess has a much wider player base than codeforces, AND super is not even as extreme of an adjective as legendary.
orz. you should be an English teacher!
"All theese LGMs", as if there's like 10 people around 4000. If you look at leaderboard on right part of the page, you can see that number 10 already has less than 3400. So getting 4000 is extremely hard, at such rating even being 2nd means you lose rating.
I would say that orzdevinwang got pretty close recently. But yes, it is more like $$$3$$$. And of course I'm not trying to detract from any of their achievements, but wouldn't it be nice if a $$$4000+$$$ rating could be achieved by $$$1$$$ person at most, especially if we are calling participants with $$$1000$$$ rating less than it $$$legendary$$$?
Rating is simply very volatile at that level. You can gain or lose 100 per contest easily.
But still, there are just too many people near $$$4000$$$ for $$$3000$$$ to be considered legendary.
A chimpanzee, so wild and free, Can’t quite grasp the thoughts you see. It swings and grins, but in its mind, The world’s a puzzle it can’t unwind.
okay I got one for you (it took like over an hour)
The onlookers mock; they jeer and shriek
at the chimp with truth, so bleak.
But through their taunts, their sneers, their attack
they too recognize the gloomy fact:
the rating of 3000 is no longer so peak.
orzdevinwang is undoubtedly the goat among CHN OIers, and jiangly has also achieved a lot in CP. Despite this, they are still close to but not yet at $$$4000$$$. So it seems that $$$4000$$$ is still reasonable :).
How is a rating of $$$4000$$$ reasonable? Magnus is the best chess player of all time, but he is not even $$$3000$$$. $$$4000$$$ is just not a reasonable rating, especially since $$$3000+$$$ is considered legendary. Bigfoot is legendary, not $$$3000$$$ on codeforces.
I even found an old thread about the rating system where users actually kind of respected the truth in the name legendary grand master. There were only $$$2$$$ or $$$3$$$ at the time, but everyone was concerned about the possibility that more could arise in the future. Why would you celebrate more LGMs? It doesn't really say anything about the actual improvement of cf's userbase — it just says that the rating system is inflated at the top (and possibly more users are joining, but I don't think that that is such a big issue). But here we are with $$$50+$$$ active LGMs, and the title has lost pretty much all meaning. You aren't one of the best of all time if you reach $$$3000$$$, now you must reach $$$4000$$$. What happens when $$$3$$$ or $$$4$$$ users get to $$$4000+$$$ simultaneously? Well, according to codeforces, they are all so beyond "legendary" that they should be put into a whole separate category. But I'd say that if $$$5+$$$ people get to that title, then that title itself isn't even worthy of the word $$$legendary$$$.
It's not about quantity, it's about ratio
To be honest, I don't think it is. For example, in soccer, there are only two players that would be considered legendary, and soccer is much more popular than competitive programming. I think that, for pretty much any sport, there are like at most $$$5$$$ legends.
Jiangly is already a legend.
That's true, but if Jiangly reaches 4000, then Jiangly would be even more legendary. I mean If jiangly reaches 4000, it will elevate an already legendary status to untouchable greatness!
Yes
we will have a tourist jiangly but a non tourist tourist
I'm curious about whether the name of rating 4000+ will change or not if jiangly can reach 4000+.
I think Mike is trying hard to find a new name instead of tourist because it doesn't really fit well with jiangly
