what is better in training 1 — learn a specific algorithm then practice on it 2 — try to solve new problems and if they need new algorithm learn it

I did the first one, and I think the second one sucks. I just hate it when I spend a lot of time trying to solve a problem that needs an algorithm that I don't know.
