5 Things I Wish I Knew Before My First Codeforces Div Contest

The first time I joined a Codeforces contest, I was super excited... but after an hour of silent confusion and panic, I really wished someone had warned me! So here are 5 things I wish I knew before diving into my first Div:

  1. Don’t just jump into Problem A! Yeah, A is supposed to be easy, but sometimes it's sneaky! Try reading A and B in the first couple of minutes—you might find B easier for you.

Tip: If you're stuck on a problem for more than 10 minutes with no idea, just move on!

  1. Your time is more valuable than your code! You don't need perfect code on the first try. Focus on getting the algorithm right, then come back and clean up the code.

Be smart, not perfect!

  1. Pretests passed? Doesn’t mean you’re safe! Don't be fooled by “Pretests Passed.” Double-check your logic and think of tricky edge cases.

One tiny bug can ruin your whole rank!

  1. Not everyone is here to win! A lot of people are just here to learn and improve—don’t think everyone’s a Grandmaster.

You're racing against yourself, not the scoreboard!

  1. Virtual contests are your secret weapon! Practice old contests in “virtual” mode. Set a timer, simulate the real pressure—it really helps reduce panic in the live ones.

Final thoughts: Every contest teaches you something new. Don’t stress too much, and never judge your skill by one contest. If you found these tips useful, let me know: What’s the #1 lesson you learned from your first contest
