night.watchman's blog

By night.watchman, history, 2 years ago, In English

It's great to hear about Indian prodigy Gukesh's victory in the Candidates Tournament. That means he is the next challenger of world Chess Championship. It will be Ding Liren vs Gukesh Dommaraju.

People often compare Coders and Chess players. Like tourist vs Magnus Carlsen. Comparing Coders and Chess players might be interesting due to the similarities in titles like GM, IM, CM etc. exist in both fields.

I'm curious to collect people's CF and Chess ratings together. Comment down your Peak CF Rating and Peak Chess rating (For Chess Rating you may Choose Lichess, Chess.com or even Fide).

Example: me(night.watchman) CF peak: 1459, Chess: 1960 (Lichess).

Huge congrats to Gukesh for the win, although I'm heartbroken for Fabi. Anyways great (and quite surprising) to see chess come up in here!

Just curious, what do you think is harder, chess or CP? At which of the two did you feel more difficulty improving and how much hardwork does each one of them take to get to elite levels?

It's tough to say because I'm not sure what rating I'd achieve on Codeforces if I put in the same amount of time as I did with chess. I'd probably lean towards saying that chess seemed easier for me to improve in, considering I had a higher rating after 3 years of playing chess, which is the same amount of time I've spent on Codeforces.

Just from curiosity, does Chess feel a bit complex to you or don't you spent enough time on chess? in general, i saw people with lower CF rating and higher Chess rating.

I wouldn't say that I studied chess extensively but I definitely tried to do my best for quite some time, and I am just struggling to climb higher. I guess it is just a different skill... I got to this 1300-1600 range almost immediately, and then I am not progressing at all.

I'd assume there's no inverse correlation if you had perfect data, but the sample in this blog might be biased — people feel encouraged to comment either if they are proud of their CF rating or if they are proud of their chess rating (and in this case, statistically it's most likely that the other one will be just average and therefore will appear "low").

Unfortinatly I didn't give competitive programming so much time Although I really enjoyed it

But it becomes so boring for me to learn new topics in Competitive Programming and Reading tutorials which is a real pain for me.. But in chess, I don't need to read long boring tutorials or watch badly prepared YouTube videos to understand a problem. In chess, I just need to imagine the board. I didn't read any book about chess or watch tutorial in chess or get a coach in it.

for me cp is much easier. I'm new to cp(since enter the university, like 20 month?) and to be honest i'm not working very hard on it.

while for chess, i study for like 10year but still being a noob lol.

I think neither chess & cp are realted to IQ(it works for 2400-), our inerest matters. That's not ur fault "can't get addicted",maybe it is something we born with i guess?

also,i think it is not a good idea to be anxious on the ratings, just being happy and enjoy ur life :)
