In today’s Div2 contest,

I was able to solve questions A, B, and C easily. I took a lot of time on D1 and finally submitted it after around 2 hours. After that submission, when I saw the number of accepted solutions for D2, I felt that it was not for me. I was also feeling bored and a little demotivated, so I cleaned the code of D1 and submitted it again at around 2:30, thinking that only the first submitted code would be considered.

Later, I noticed my rank dropped from around 2k to around 3k. That made me anxious, so I asked ChatGPT about the judging rules on Codeforces. It told me that only the first accepted submission is considered and that after judging, my rank would be based on that. Being confused and trusting that explanation, I resubmitted questions A, B, and C without really thinking about the consequences.

Now I am writing this after the after-contest judging is done, and I feel completely terrible. My initial accepted submissions are skipped. My ranking changed from around 2k to 7k. It honestly hurts. It feels like a small misunderstanding and a moment of carelessness cost me a lot.

And now, because of this, I will be able to take part in tomorrow’s Div4 contest, which I originally wanted to do, but not like this. I didn’t want it to happen because of a mistake. It feels bittersweet and disappointing at the same time.

update: got -75, new rating is 1401 so will even not be able to participate in upcoming div4 contest

Did you have an actual good reason to resubmit?

    just curiosity!

my D1 submission was very messy so cleaned it up and submitted again without thinking(i know i am at fault).

and since hacks were disabled for these i don't know why later submissions are being considered

So you made 2 mistakes at once. Even if you asked Pythia, the Oracle of Delphi, and Apollo himself spoke to you through her that it's perfectly safe to resubmit, you don't gain anything by doing it, therefore you're at best wasting time this way.

Well, I got a comment from an international Grandmaster, so I guess it was worth the wasted time. (Just kidding, sometimes I love wasting time.)

all of the things you mentioned are either not real or demons, so trusting them would be a horrible idea in general

Your fault for asking ChatGPT when the "Ask a question" hotline to the contest organizers is right there...

Yeah, I agree, it was my fault. I just found it a bit funny, so I shared it.

That's the worst advice you can give. "Ask a question" is not for clarification of rules that are clearly stated. Organisers have enough troubles answering stupid questions, thanks.

If this is as obvious as you think it is, why did a contest organizer get it wrong when I asked the same question months ago? (This was corrected about two minutes later with an updated response, but the fact that someone responsible for organizing a Div2 couldn't immediately produce the correct information should tell you something.)

Anyways, I'd argue that distinction isn't a "stupid question" as you so imply. The official rules don't exactly "clearly state" that resubmissions consider the new time for scoring purposes — only that it would be considered "reason for penalty (see item 3)", somewhat implying that the only penalty would be the -50 for incorrect attempts. Of course, for experienced participants such as yourself it is obvious that the new submission time is also used for scoring purposes, but for newcomers to competitive programming, this matter doesn't have an immediately clear answer and should probably be explicitly clarified in the rules to prevent these "stupid questions" :)

bro you are lucky to solve fast C, I misunderstand the given and thought that I needed to find a subsequence in a row and wasted 2 hours on it :(

Never touch accepted submissions when u’re tired. Brain lag = bad decisions
