Hello Codeforces!

I'm glad to announce that we will be having Round 20 of MathMash today at 17: 00 UTC. The round has been prepared by Snpushpita, Joydip, thanicsamin, rah4920 and DrSwad.

The round will consist of 10 problems, to be solved within 2 hours.

Points distribution for the problems will be added soon.

We're inviting you all to join us in the contest. Hopefully we'll have a fun and successful round.

A few details about the contest:

  • In order to participate in the contest, you need to register first. Kindly follow this link to do so. Registration deadline has been removed from the contests. So now, you can register at any time before the contest ends.

  • I know this announcement is being placed in a coding website, but unfortunately using computer programs for MathMash contests is not allowed. We are trying to reward users' math skills with high ratings as there are not many sites that do this yet. We also try our best to set up the problems in such a way that any trivial brute force approach isn't supposed to work (for the mediocre/difficult problems).

  • Time-penalty is applicable for the contest: Each problem is given an appropriate number of points, which will be visible when the round starts. Participants will gain that many points — the time penalty after successfully submitting to a particular problem. The later the problem submission occurs, the more points being deducted due to time penalty.

  • The round is rated; which means that if you participate in the contest, your rating will be updated at the end of the round based on your rank in it. But you won't be considered as participating in the round if you don't submit any answer at all, even if you're registered for the contest.

Can you please change the timing as it clashes with codeforces round ?

I appreciate your concern and totally agree with you, Codeforces schedule is in fact the first important thing I consult before scheduling our own contests. I really wish I could help it, seeing all the supports to your comment. But there were sadly a few uncomfortable drawbacks to face if we rescheduled our contest:

    • Back when the MathMash round was being scheduled, I checked all the major coding platforms, but today's CF round wasn't listed back then. And I've also recently not been able to stay much regular at CF. As a result, the first time I noticed today's CF round had been during writing this blog, with less than a day to go. And I didn't feel confident enough, that after a week of being scheduled and sending out emails, we can suddenly inform all the members of this abrupt change. It'll be a far more sad incident, if even a single participant came to join the contest after anticipating it for a week and missing in the end just because we suddenly decided to move it forward.
    • A few of the most relied upon setters will be participating in the upcoming IMO and so they're not avaliable most of the time at the moment. They have to finish up preparing their assigned problems during the last day to the contest. So, suddenly rescheduling the contest forward, will also make it risky to set up everything properly in the server before the contest, shortening the already little time we get before the round starts.

I hope you'll understand the issues. It's been a busy week for me, but I wish I had seen the CF round coming yesterday. However, I'll try to watch out more often from now on so that these scheduling issues could be avoided in future.

Maybe it's possible to start MathSmash 1hr later, so that one could participate in both contests (and miss 30minutes of some of them, okay)?

Maybe Mathmash should be added to this so that everyone knows and set their schedule accordingly. Not all problem setters know the existence of MM just yet
