Fayaz's blog

By Fayaz, history, 6 years ago, In English

So I was just surfing the web (as one usually does) and I came across this site -> https://codeforc.es/ . The site is basically a carbon copy of this one and I was wondering whether it was officially owned by codeforces or is possibly something more sinister.

Well, in fact it's a mirror for Chinese users.

It's really helpful for many Chinese users to view Codeforces fluently.

And thanks Menci for building this.

It is some kind of fishing. Do not enter your password there. If you did, ASAP change the password. Now it is blocked.

I mean XD as if you were ever encoding passwords during registration.

Password is sent as plain-text and probably stored on the server without encryption. Why bother pretending like you're doing something more secure than a phishing website.

      You should use HTTPS.

There is no way to keep the password secure without some unsymmetric encryption. And it' s stupid to implement a custom (and maybe buggy) unsymmetric encryption, while there is SSL/TLS existing.

And for password storage, any rational website is using some hash algorithm with a salt. I don't think Mike so stupid to store some plain password.

Even if it is a phishing site, you have to admit the url is way cooler than plain old codeforces.com

Well, this domain is owned by me and I set up the mirror for China users, for whose network route may be very bad to CF's server in SGU. I blocked some external scripts such as FB's which China users can hardly load successfully. I didn't set up anything about stealing the password and I promise I won't. I'll try to keep this site up (But I may block connections from non-China later).

How did you set up a mirror? Do you need some special priviliges to do it or can anyone do it? How does that mirror connect to original codeforces Server? Is there an API?

I am from China, and it uses me about 1 minutes to access codeforces.com, but only 5 seconds using codeforc.es.

Anyway, thanks Menci for setting up such a fantastic mirror.

ps: Menci is a well-known OIer(ACMer?) from China, and he's a reliable person who I trust.

Menci is very well-known and trusted in China. He built one of the most famous online judge in China: LibreOJ. I, as well as most Chinese users, trust him and do not believe that he is going to use this site for fishing. Please, MikeMirzayanov, do not block this site.

now it isn't blocked, but it keeps on crashing during a contest, different errors keep on flashing on my screen such as "500 internal server error", "502 bad gateway", "cannot access codeforc.es", and things like that.

[EDIT] I trust Menci like most of us here.

If Codeforces build a sever for Chinese users, we won't use it. But It's to long for Chinese users to visit Codeforces per time(more than 20 seconds sometimes). So although it mignt be a fishing website, we still use it.

It seems not working. Either a bug in Codeforces or a bug in my browser.

When I press "save changes" it just remains unchecked.

Why do I still frequently encounter the error 'Error 403' while in China? Menci
