300iq's blog

By 300iq, history, 5 years ago, In English

Hello, everyone!

I think that you often have something to ask or discuss advanced CP topics or some OpenCup rounds or hard problems, and it is not worth creating new codeforces blog, but current popular places with CP chats (i.e OJ chats, or discord, or some country-local chats) are too local and don't have too many people with who you can divide your discussion.

So, I come up with the idea and talked with some of my friends, that it would be cool to create telegram chat with some lower bound on the rating to join.

Now I suggest a lower bound 2600 on rating.

I. e. if you want to join the chat, and if your MAX rating is at least 2600 (so if at some point you had IGM rank), you can write me your telegram login in personal messages, and I will add you to the chat.

Of course, the lower bound may be adjusted later. And if you have suggestions about the proper places for creating this chat, you can write them in comments :) (don't worry, telegram is very convenient!)

I think this is bad idea to split opencup discussion on two resources. Why codeforces blogs are not enough? Are you really bothered by comment of people with rating < 2600? Now after opencup round I am checking cf discussion. I am not happy with wasting time on checking one place more.

I could understand such idea for people whose native language is not russian and not english. Obviously they have reasons to have chat in their native language. But looks like you just want create club, this is rather destructive for community.

It is not about opencups. It is just a good opportunity to chat and discuss something. For example, you wrote some old contest, and want to discuss it, does it worth necroposting the old blog? Of course, the main discussion of opencups still can be held at codeforces. I am not doing any destruction for the community, I just wanted to create a convenient way to talk about problems. I had similar thoughts as you at first, but I discussed it with my friends and we thought that it is a cool idea.

I dont see any problem in creating blog on cf about old contest. I triggered on opencup, because you mentioned it. I am sure that it is very bad idea to split discussion about any online rounds or problems.

There are a lot of local chats in different countries, which don't give you any inconvenience, and they are very cool. And I wanted to make something like that, but international. Because I know that a lot of people, including me, are interested in discussions similar to local country chats, but with guys from other countries. Also, it is very useful for strong guys from countries, which don't have a lot of other strong guys.

I agree that local chats in native language are useful. But I don't understand why international discussion on cf isn't good enough.

I don't think that language is the real reason why local chats are better for discussing than cf, that's why I decided to create such chat for international discussions.

Okay, as for me, codeforces is not suitable for moments when you just want to talk about some problem, etc, I think it is clear that discussions in local chats are much more active than discussions on Codeforces, I think that it is just because such chats are more suitable for that.

I understand your opinion about the main discussion of competitions, and I think it is good to leave them at Codeforces. But chats are just about much more general conversations than cf.

Chatting is more convenient for not so well structured conversation, often consisting of single sentences. Examples: C sucked; did you solve D in sqrt complexity? I spent 10 minutes on A xd

I can describe something in 1 minute in fb chat with friends while I would spend 5 minutes doing that in CF because I don't use thought-shortcuts then and many readers aren't so experienced. So yeah, there is some sense in chats. Language isn't a big deal here.

Also, I would prefer discord over telegram. It's more international and widely used, isn't it?

        High-rated people will understand faster.

Actually, I don't like the idea of a chat made for discussing contests or advanced content. A forum is better for that. I expect random things like examples I gave, but we'll see.

I'd also argue that if everyone who wants to ask for help with an interesting problem posts on CF, if you don't check it hourly, you'll miss track of the posts. In addition, most posts asking for a particular problem get at most 1-2 answers (or none at all) and then just get dusty. Plus the main point (and reason for the lower bound), that it's supposed you'd have to give fewer details in a group like this one because people would understand faster.

And the truth is that apparently most people are part of several groups of this kind. At least this one would be a big one that anyone can get in without knowing anyone from the group beforehand. I have been added to my first such group (which was dead anyway) towards the ending of my training period for CP and totally wish to have joined an active one when I was still learning and spending more time on it. So you'd have a welcoming group instead of many exclusive ones, which I suppose is better.

Last but not least, this shouldn't affect the quantity of CF blogs much. Just count the number of blogs asking for help of people whose max rating is above 2600. They rarely ask for general help. Most of them prefer to ask some of their smart friends and either get help or eventually give up. Even so, some still write relevant content to help others.

A discussion like that isn't anything like Codeforces. You usually don't go "checking" a discussion since it is almost impossible to scroll through all these messages. That is simply a place for one to ask random questions and get fast feedback, this is what usually happens in the discussion groups I'm in.
