Hello Codeforces!

Less than a week to IOI 2025! I used accounts from this blog and made the prediction for the IOI 2025 ranking. Ratings are calculated based on the average of the current rating and the maximum rating.

My predictions for top 5 are as follow and beleave me this is true: Triseedot He will be the first because he practices informatics from aa young age la from 4th or 5th grade and perfomrs really well at olympiads. barbie He will be the second because he solved lots of problems on cf and other websites. At his full potential on cf he would be red. For the next 3 winners i am not sure how to sort them so i will put them just randomly. alinp Amazing solving abillities. Solved just around 400 problems but will already participate at IOI and is getting silver at BOI this year. There are very few people who become violet just from 400 problems. waipoli Nobody beleaved that he will get to IOI. Clasified 3rd in Moldova. Don't know what to expect from him. cherryk Also i don't have any idea how he became so good. Solved on cf only 150 problems and on other websites very few problems. Crazy solving abilities just as other contestants. Good luck to them. I'm sure this is the corect listing!

I personally don't think it's a good idea to post predicted ranks and awards for everyone. This is different from saying "XXX will win IOI", it just feels discouraging to many participants.

Also it's based on cf rate

Disagree. Even though I honestly consider this prediction pretty much a complete bulshit because, even though there is some, generally there is very little correlation between relative cf rating and ioi performance, and the list feels pretty much "sort by rating and then add some rng to it" (at least to someone who knows ~30-40% of participants personally and their abilities)

With all that, this blog is just fun and I love the idea. Cheers to Arpa for making it.

fortunately Arpa has a blog about that too, which proves otherwise (unless his data analysis is wrong). Blog

Fortunately, this blog exactly proves my point. The only thing "proving otherwise" is some approximating line, which can be drawn in 10 other ways without the picture loosing any sense.

Instead, things proving my point are:

        1) too large spread around the line? Like +-500 rating which is absourdly much. You can not really approximate anything when rating is between 0 and, say, 3000, and your error is +-500

        2) the immense number of, let's call them, inversions? I mean people with lower rating ranking above people with higher rating. Look at picture carefully, this is very, very frequent case.

        3) how do you even comment this

For most ranges i can draw an up-going line. Does that mean in your opinion, that, say, for silver medal, the lower your rating is, the higher are chances? Of course the amount of small ranges i split the the above picture is also absurd and in no way I mean it as an actual argumentation of my point. But so does feel the picture from blog too.

So if all from above still leave you convinced that there indeed is some correlation other than "if you're 500 rating above person, you're highly likely to classify above them" (which surely works for 500-difference, and I believe does not for 200-300 rating difference), I have no chance to convince you otherwise.

So, to me the blog does not feel like any serious argument of any opinion. It surely is a fun content, but you also (almost) never argument your words by quoting some comment from, say, youtube. Feel bad if for you it is not so.

          As mentioned in the blog:

A higher CF rating, with a gap of at least 100, correlates with an 87% chance of achieving a better placement at IOI.

I think I have some thoughts here. Arpa mentioned:

"A higher CF rating, with a gap of at least 100, correlates with an 87% chance of achieving a better placement at IOI."

Now, this statement can be true, but at the same time, it needs a bit more investigation maybe.

          Imagine a list of people with rating like [1000, 1100, 1200, 1300, 1400, 1500, 1600, 1700, 1800, 1900, 2000, 2100, 2200, 2300, 2400, 2500, 2600, 2700]

(I know this is not perfect, of course as the distribution should have much less occurrence of high ratings, it shouldn't be equal etc)

So, the thing is: in the cases with "a gap of at least 100", there can be lots of cases with 400-500 gap or more which might inflate this statistic a bit. I think the more correct question would be something like: "what %age do we see if gaps are between 100-150 points" or "150-200" and "200-250" respectively.

Because otherwise, I feel compared to gaps between 100-150 (say), there are lots more cases of gaps bigger than that!

After all, gaps of size 100 are O(n) in the list I showed, but gaps > 200 or > 100 can be O(n^2)!

Arpa maybe it would be enlightening if you could do this analysis for different gap ranges or something, or something which accounts for the issue you mentioned. I know long back you had shared this data with me, but due to some technical issues, i wasn't able to access the site which you had shared the data on. (And didn't want to disturb you back then)

As for you, TimDee, there is one issue with the argument you showed as well. You used the IOI rank vs CF rating, right? And claimed because there are inversions, the predictions won't make sense. Now, the thing is you could probably use CF rank vs CF rating as a graph as well, and there also maybe you find quite a bit of inversions (I suspect less than IOI of course but not very less).

In that case though, I'm sure we can't say that "CF rating is not a predictor of CF skill", because CF rating is CF skill by definition! So, what I mean is: maybe what you point out could have a lot of noise too.... as in "real expected IOI rank is x" (as predicted) but inversions also come from noise.

Both the factors I mentioned above, are in opposite directions, maybe the truth lies somewhere between these two, and perhaps somewhere between Arpa and TimDee and Dominater069

Yeah, you've got a point here.

What I meant mostly was that the presented above list feels, more or less, like "sorted by rating + added some white noise". Even looking at day 1 results you can see that it clearly differs a lot from actual ranking (at the same time there are a lot of matches, yes).

My point wasn't based on any statistics and predictions, my point was based on most of people whom i personally know (and their ioi skill level respectively) and can roughly tell what to expect from their placement in ranking.

In particular, it's way too early to judge from day1 only, but you can compare the current gold standings with the predicted ones. While chinese and korean participants indeed do match it, most other people do not.

For sure, when I increase the 100 and make it 150 or more, the chance of getting a better placement grows.

Yeah but wouldn't the meaningful thing be something like "between 100-200 gap" instead of "more than 100" or "more than 150..." because "more than 100" or something will include gaps of 400 and 500.. which will trivially inflate the stat right?

Finally got what you are trying to say.

                Based on IOI 2025,

                • for rating gap between 100 to 200, better CF rate means 62% more chance to get better position.

                • for rating gap between 200 to 400, better CF rate means 74% more chance to get better position.

                  I see.

OMG BTW please correct me if I'm wrong, but don't these numbers seem kind of low....? But maybe that's expected.

                  I mean, if A has a rating gap of x over B,

                  At least theoretically

                  The win probability of A is 1 / [1 + 10^((A-B)/400)]

So, for a gap of 200 => about 75% win rate (theoretically)

In your case, for the 200 to 400 range (as in average 300 rating-ish kinda, I know not perfect), you get the 74%-ish number. (real)

And in the 100-200 range, average 150-ish you get the number 62% (real)

Theoretically, for a gap of 150, we get 70% as per the elo formula

Whereas theoretically for a gap of 100 we get something like 64% (which is close to your number)

                  So in your experiment:

300 avg gap (real) acts more like 200 gap (theoretical)

150-ish avg gap (real) acts more like 100 gap (real)

This may suggest that: a gap in CF skill of 150 may be more like an "IOI-skill" gap of 100, whereas a somewhat larger gap of 300 behaves more like an "IOI skill" gap of 200.

That seems intuitive... as the gap becomes larger, one person probably becomes hyper-specialised to CF and their rating doesn't generalise much.

Overall yeah results make sense (I think?)

Also: it would be interesting to see... the results you showed above... the 100-200 gap and 200-400 gap vs IOI result.... how does that compare to a typical codeforces round result....

Because: maybe all that we saw could also have some element of noise etc. after all: when I used the theoretical Elo win probability formula I'm not sure there's any guarantee that a CF contest will follow that formula.... approximately.

However it does make sense to me that winning on CF by x rating points maps more to being better at IOI by x — 50 or x — 100 points... because while CF And IOI are correlated, they're somewhat different skills.

In my opinion this ranking lacks certain data to make an accurate prediction like actual TST rankings or progression rankings in general. I'll use my friend kianthemathguy as an example, because he is ranked last among my teammates even though he is an IMO medalist (the only one of us 4) and has a solid lead in all TSTs we've done for Algerian teams this year (factors which should easily and already do put him as first on our team) . I can already vouch for the fact that this ranking is wrong for our team, I can only assume how incorrect it would be for the others.

The idea of predicting ranks is already a bad idea outside Top10 given that some people don't even grind codeforces rating. This directly applies to Algerian IOI Team

    kianthemathguy will win IOI25!
