Hmm. Will WF 2020 and 2021 be at almost the same time? It's doable when the organisers are different, but still tougher.

Not very nice to the teams having 1 or 2 participants retired after this WF.

What do you mean through retired? I'm pretty sure they'll consider the initial eligibility (as in if you graduated or have passed the age limit in the meantime, you'd still be able to compete). It would be very unfair to not do that, but assuming that's the case, I don't see any huge problems with that

I know quite a few people who went to their last ICPC World Finals with "I'm so glad I can finally stop training afterwards" mindset. I wonder how they are going to feel about this great opportunity to improve their skills for another year :)

If they don't want to, they don't have to. I, too, have opportunities to do a lot of stuff I don't enjoy — and I refuse to take these opportunities.

For example, a team where two participants already were on one WF, but for third one it will be the first. Should the third teammate practice with old team (season 2020) or new team (season 2021)?

Not entirely sure how we're gonna practice though.

Also, the options for Day Zero activities made me really hopeful that the activities will be great.

I received the following email from ICPC headquarters today...

Notice: Scheduling the ICPC World Finals in Moscow hosted by MIPT

Dear World Finals Participant,

  • Due to the challenges of international travel, MIPT and the ICPC are examining options to reschedule the ICPC World Finals in Moscow from June 2021 to the 4th quarter of 2021.
  • Please delay plans for traveling to the ICPC Moscow World Finals at this time.
  • An update will be posted by March 17, 2021.

Since molamola. is plan to enter the army to serve his military service (which is mandatory) before 4Q, our team (ainta, molamola., TLEwpdus) might not be able to attend WF 2020 :(

So sad for you. Probably icpc committee would allow team changes in this case, so that you can attend with someone else.

I don't know if this is the most fair way, but if I remember correctly second team from SNU also did extremely well. So maybe they could be allowed to attend, with the members of the current SNU team getting an extra year of eligibility in their stead (I do not agree with the option of a member who is not part of a WF qualified team getting to attend WF)

For those, who are also wondering, I received the following email:

Hi Yahor! Our hosts are in the process of moving the World Finals to this fall. Another update will be sent by email on April 1. However, please know that final dates have not been selected yet. Lisa

So it seems, that finals will be moved once again. Thanks to organizers, who really care about participants(especially about retired ones) and decide not to hold it online!

Since some people also didn't receive an update(did anyone get it?), I will continue to post replies to my emails:

Hello, I'm sorry you didn't receive the latest update. I'm wondering if it might have gone to spam or junk. Could you please check? This update was sent a couple of weeks ago. We still don't have exact dates, but our hosts are targeting the month of October or early November and are in the process of securing venues and hotels. As soon as we have more information, we will send another update. If you don't receive one in the next few days, please feel free to email me back.

Thank you,

Lisa

I haven't received any update from ICPC since the beginning of March.

Does anyone think if there is a way to force ICPC to finally host it online this summer? Postponing it further is not a good option for me as well, and I haven't seen anyone here supporting their current plan.

I understand why for a lot of people online-finals seems like a good idea, but for me this idea sounds not so great.

It would be my first (and last) finals, and I extremely want to visit offline event, because I never experienced it and I want to participate in real event, not in virtual emulatuion. So, as for me, any delay is better than online finals

I agree with you. Hosting it online would come with significant issues, such as dropping rules about at most one person coding at the same time (this is completely unenforceable, unless people are supervised somehow and physically in the same place, which is not far from being physically in Moscow) and maybe even about googling possibly useful stuff/copy pasting code/using pre-written code/pre-configured environment. All this while also having students completely lost the experience of the event. I can understand how someone very good whose last major CP event was this is negatively affected, but it would be pretty unfair to deprive other contestants of the chance to an onsite event even if that means the event takes place 2-3 years later. I'm pretty sure the majority would prefer it this way if you made a poll, and although democracy is a complete shit, I tend to believe that in the case of a contest meant at popularizing this stuff, the mass of people does matter more (this is obviously a very subjective take on the subject). I also think there's a case where people would lose motivation/future editions will more likely end up online even when things can be done to host them onsite if this particular finals ends up being online (see IOI where last year they took forever to reach a conclusion, and this year they've already decided a loooong way before they'll keep it online — there, however, students being in high school and much stricter age limits unfortunately make it impossible to be postponed for more than a few months).

By online I mean on several supervised locations around the world, of course. Local travelling will open (is already open?) much earlier than global.

I'd like to have it offline too — if held online, it just seems like any other competition I would qualify for (Codejam, Hackercup etc). I'd like to be there in person and meet other Finalists — and it's not clear I'll qualify for another WF (even if I do, with this one being online it's highly likely the next one will also be online). It's inconvenient for my team as well (we'll be 3 members in 3 different countries by October), but for me the experience >> the inconvenience.

No option is good, that's just the sad reality we're facing. Personally, I think the ability to have ICPC World Finals in-person is essential, and I support their efforts to make it so despite the delay.

Looks like I missed a thread. I received the following email on March 17.

Dear 2020 World Finals participant,

With the full support of the ICPC, our host MIPT is currently working on options to reschedule the ICPC World Finals in Moscow for the 4th quarter of 2021 when international travel restrictions should be much easier than June 2021. Therefore, please do not make transportation or hotel plans until you receive final confirmation regarding the contest dates.

An update will be sent by email on April 1, 2021.

Best,

Dr. William B. Poucher, Ph.D.

ICPC Executive Director

Sadly, I did not receive any more emails.

I really want to visit Russia and meet WF contestants around the world. But, to be honest, ..." for the 4th quarter of 2021 when international travel restrictions should be much easier than June 2021 " is just a joke to me. I also understand the circumstance and their spirit to host WF on-site, but we all know that ICPC cannot ensure this. Furthermore, ICPC cannot help anything related to self-quarantine schedules and other personal issues.

Well, it might be a personal rant. Years passed, and I already graduated university. I have to enter the mandatory military army service within a year or so (and one of my teammate is already serving), and I'm not sure if I can attend it on-site. I am also aware of plagiarism, technical issues or absence of on-site experiences, since competitive programming was a big factor of my university life.

Possibly changing the roadmap from on-site to online might be too late or the sunk cost is tremendous, but the similar burden goes to the postponement. It's a tiring problem, the World Finals, to all of us.

Did anyone receive any updates after the aforementioned July 10th? Asking to "block the dates" is nice but does anyone still believe that the Finals will actually happen on October 12th? It would be nice to hear at least anything from the organizing committee as October approaches very fast.
