I am just wondering, how does your place's (country?) OI team selection work?
I am from Hong Kong and to join the HKOI selection process, we must register through our school. Unfortunately, my teacher did not confirm through the three confirmation emails and thus did not sign me up for the heat event, therefore I miss an annual chance to join the HKOI. Therefore, I am wondering if it is the same anywhere else, that you must register through your school? That sounds stupid to me but HKOI (hi tony) simply replied with "rules are rules".
In addition, I have joined the mirror of China OI first round selection and did decent. I asked HKOI if they can make an exception for me, especially since it wasn't even my fault (again, the teacher did not check the confirmation emails), but they won't let me join the second round of HKOI with those results.
Hope this makes sense, since I am probably leaving out details of the HKOI selection process.
I am italian and every stage of the OI used to be onsite, with the first one being held in schools. Schools must be registered but most of them do so when asked by students. Anyway, there is the possibility of participating in another school.

I agree you should try to get in through another school. That seems very unfair for you not to be able to participate.
Yeah it's stupid that a mistake someone (a generation above me) made ruined my chance, and for example I could've written the results in my college application.

In Ireland, it has nothing to do with schools. We have a two-month-long qualification round, done at home with no time restrictions. After that, the top performers are invited to the onsite national finals at a single university, where we have a 5 hour round. From here, the top 8ish are invited for TST, which is of course onsite, where there's another 5 hour contest. The scores from both of these rounds (national and TST) are averaged to select the team.
It definitely sounds dumb that you're being penalised for your teacher's mistake, but unfortunately I don't think I can help as I know almost nothing about the HKOI :/

In Croatia, we have 2 competitions: the standard national competition and HONI (COCI is the international mirror of HONI), and we register for these competitions through our school. The best 20-25 people from those competitions can participate in COI (Croatian Olympiad in Informatics), and the top 6-10 COI contestants have 2 more competitions, usually about 1-2 months after COI. And, finally, for each contestant the points from those competitions are added to the points from COI, and the top 4 contestants are in the national team (they go to CEOI and IOI).
I am from Hong Kong and every stage is onsite (usually/always Chinese University of Hong Kong) except since COVID started. There're six stages essentially.
0) school sign you up (8 junior + 8 senior for each school)
1) essentially an ICT paper test
2) simple coding problems -> 90 junior + 90 senior

4) Team Selection/Formation Test -> 15 people?
5) Team training
6) Based on more tests and 2345 pick people for IOI, NOI(China OI), APIO, etc

In Singapore, our selection has 2 (or arguably 3) stages.
The 0th stage is school level. Every school can send 5 contestants for the NOI.
The first stage is the NOI. The top 16-30 contestants (depending on the year) get to go on to APIO.
The second stage is APIO. The sum of scores (normalised to 50% each) is used to decide.
Whether or not this is good is up for debate, given that scores can be within 1% point of each other and NOI and APIO could completely exclude or include some topics.
In India the team selection process is as follows:
The first round of the Indian Computing Olympiad consists of two parts.
Students can qualify for the National Olympiad by qualifying in either ZIO, ZCO or both.
The next round is Indian National Olympiad in Informatics (INOI). It is also an onsite programming contest containing 2 problems(with subtasks) to be solved in 3 hours.
Around 30 students are selected from INOI for International Olympiad in Informatics Training Camp (IOITC). This training camp, in general, is for 10 days and usually held in May. Out of these 30 students 4 students are selected for the Indian IOI team.
It would be great if you could also include the registration process, as it is also a part of the process
Registration is done online through the official website and schools don't have any role in the registration process.
