I think it is safe to assume we all are equally clueless and posting a blog here won't trigger any updates. It is better to wait patiently.
Yeah, atleast the online round can be held. Onsite regionals can be thought about after that
I hope online to be on codechef only if they have removed all website issues else it should be on codeforces or some other judge.
Update : It will be on codedrills.io.
And the wait is over... ICPC'21
Official announcement is out now! Link — https://www.amrita.edu/icpc21
Amrita will host the 2020 Regional contest that was cancelled because of the pandemic, in May 2021. Both the Preliminary Round & Regional Round will be held online on CODEDRILLS platform.
Preliminary Round: May 16; 2.5 hours duration. Registration to start on March 1 on Baylor System and ends on April 30. There is no Registration fee to participating in the Preliminary Online Round.
Regional Round: May 30; 5 hours duration. Teams will be promoted after the Preliminary Online Round.
Will this online Prelims round be for only Amritapuri Regionals ? (If no then does this means that there will be other rounds for different Regional sites?)
Having regionals online is gonna cause a cheating fest. Are they gonna take any necessary action to prevent this?
I think the constraint of "only X number of teams from one college reach the regionals" can limit the amount of cheating to a great extent (but not eradicate it).
This thing is present in kanpur(2 teams), gwalior(2 teams) and kgp(1 team) sites but not in amritapuri although amritapuri has certain reserved seats which are filled by only 1 team per college (or at least that's what happened in 2019).
In my personal opinion, there will be a lot of cheating even with these constraints, but it would be infinitely more without such constraints.
Amritapuri technically had a cap of 20 teams per college if I remember correctly last to last year; it's just that they never hit this cap.
Wasn't it 20 till 2019 and reduced to something like 8 or 10 last year to increasing number of colleges participating?
The ICPC Asia director made a blog discussing this. The options they considered are:
I may have missed some, but these were the important ones. It also talked about having interviews of the top contestants about the problems as a means to ensure that the solution was theirs, and no one sent the code to them.
I think this is pretty much the best they can do. I also think cheating isn't that big a deal for the top teams anyway — it's unlikely they'd cheat, and also unlikely people can get help from someone good enough to beat them. Maybe I'm naive.
Only replying to your last paragraph. There's a thing called college reputation that exists. I won't be surprised if people who have graduated from college (and hence can't participate anymore) might be willing to help their juniors.
Sorry, couldn't resist.
In my college (BITS Pilani) people don't care about ICPC, so there isn't any reputation to uphold. I assumed that it was mostly the same in other colleges. If people care that much you may be right, but at the same time I can't think of much else the administration can do for this.
It would be really great if people were that honest. But the thing is, what if 2-3 strong teams decide to form an alliance and share ideas? There's literally no way to catch them.
In my opinion, with schools already starting all over India, I dont get whats the problem with having an onsite regional with necessary precautions with over 3 months to prepare.
Actually, the fb post does mention that they hope to have an onsite regional if it's feasible. We can only hope that it happens.
Yeah, especially since the tone of their message made it seem like that the Asia West finals will almost certainly be held onsite at some later date. In that case it might make sense to try to hold the regionals onsite a week or two before it.
Frankly, none of those 3 options are going to really be effective if participants want to bypass it:
lol
Just run in as a guest OS and run whatever you want alongside it. Or use another system / your phone to do whatever
Recording what? Frankly unless you somehow maintain a 360 recording people will find ways to cheat (and they probably will even if this is done).
Interviews with the top participants? What if someone says "I brute forced for small values and guessed the answer" or "Yeah I've seen this exact idea in some old TopCoder problem, don't remember the name of the problem thought". Do they accept that? If yes, well you can come up with fake answers for anything lmao. If no, then congrats they will 100% disqualify some valid AC solutions.
But yeah I do agree that I don't have any better ideas either, its frankly the maximum they can do to prevent cheating if they're insistent on an online regional.
But I would disagree with that last point somewhat. Suppose several teams with average rating x cheat, then I wouldn't be surprised if they managed to offset a few teams even with average x + 300 or so rating. They would likely be able to come up with ideas for the easier problems really quickly and then you just need 1 or 2 of them to get luckier than usual and see an idea they're good at or have some intuition click for one of the later problems.
Auto comment: topic has been updated by Bhj2001 (previous revision, new revision, compare).
Lets go ;)
Can 2021 graduates participate in it?
The best thing is that "There is no Registration fee to participating in the Preliminary Online Round."
Have there been any updates about the other regionals? Two months on and the Amritapuri online round is still the only one open for registration.
Kanpur, Gwalior-Pune and Kharagpur show up in the upcoming regionals for Asia West, but they still aren't open for registrations so they might just be placeholders.
Thanks for info keep updating if possible because it really helps.
Dates of Icpc amritapuri online round extended till last week of june 2021 due to covid. T_T
