Namaste Codeforces!

We, CodeClub, the Computer Science and Engineering Department Club of IIT Kharagpur, are glad to invite you to participate in our landmark 25th CodeNiteCodeforces Round 1033 (Div. 2) and CodeNite 2025, which will take place on Jun/21/2025 17:35 (Moscow time).

You will be given 7 problems and 2 hours to solve them. This round will be rated for participants whose rating is below 2100. Participants with higher rating can participate unofficially.

The problems are prepared by Dragmon and the amazing former CodeClub President harshith_04. Special thanks to picramide for his support throughout the process and for his help in preparing the problems.

We would like to thank everyone who made this round possible:

We really hope that you like the problems. Shubhakamana tatha vijaya!

UPD1: Unfortunately, today we found out that one of the harder problems was an exact match to an earlier published problem. Therefore, we have decided to only hold the Div. 2 round. We hope for your understanding. It will now have 6 or 7 problems, and you will be given 2 hours to solve them. We hope for your understanding. The scoring distribution will be announced soon.

UPD2: There will be 7 problems in the round and you will be given 2 hours to solve them.

UPD3: Editorial.

Score Distribution: $$$500-750-1250-1750-2500-3000-4000$$$

    Competitive Programming in 2025 – A Broken Race?

    Two coders. Same leaderboard.

    1. One writes 200+ lines, fails test case #83, debugs, and finally ACs.
    2. The other pays ₹25 and submits instantly.

    Result?

    1. Both rank above you. One earned it.
    2. The other bought it.

    The problem: CP is turning into a “pay-to-win” model.

    Impact:

    1. Honest coders feel demotivated
    2. Rankings lose meaning

    The spirit of CP is at risk !!

    The ask: Platforms like Codeforces, CodeChef, LeetCode must act fast. Cheating isn’t just breaking rules — it's breaking the community.

    Let’s keep CP clean. Let’s keep it fair. Agree or disagree?

              Thats not what skipped contests mean. In this case, you submit a code, it gets accepted initially. Then due to plag/cheat detector the system "skips" your answer.

              https://cfcheatdetector.netlify.app/

              This site helps you detect people who have a history of skipped answers in contests

                What do you mean by skipped?

                Sometimes "skips your answer" could also mean you've submited a correct Solution twice during contest. So, the System skips and proceeds with the next solution during final System Tests, right?

                  That is a systemic skip. Obviously those solutions are also considered skipped, but at the end of the day, your overall verdict to that problem is still accepted, as the latest answer is accepted by the system, the previous ones are skipped.

                  When someone is flagged by plagiarism, all of their solutions are skipped, meaning, the verdict of your participation will be "skipped" rather than "accepted"

Very suspicious standings: unlike previous rounds like this and this, this contest has an weird standings where LGMs and GMs are replaced by many Div.3/4 participants and many of them have participated >=3 contests without any #200- performance. Are problems original and safe?

Edit: if AI can do this, I will not believe any online contest. As a retired observer I have deeply shocked by modern cheaters. Competitive programming is completely fked.

You are going no where with that inflated rating of your's, your resume will be shortlisted cool but you will be rejected in an actually face to face interview. Moreover don't you feel guilty? wearing that fake rating of yours

How to find number of columns in problem D??

I find number of rows using (((a-1)*k)%mod + 1)%mod;

And then number of columns = (fac(row)/(fac(a)*(fac(a-1)^(k-1))))*k*(b-1) + 1

And to find number of columns I need factorial(row) and calculating it is not possible.

Can someone please share their approach for this problem?

Thanks in advance.

    You can calculate fac(row)/(fac(a-1)^(k-1)) because it only has a factors and then use modular inverse to calculate 1/fac(a) It should be O(a)

    Let's say you got the submatrix with the same element $$$x$$$, there are $$$\binom{n}{a}$$$ ways to choose some rows to fill with the same element, and for each way, you have $$$b-1$$$ chances not to fill $$$x$$$ ($$$k - 1$$$ other values), and you will fill $$$b$$$ columns with $$$x$$$. Thus, the answer is $$$m=\binom{n}{a} \times k \times (b-1) + 1$$$. And since $$$\sum a \le 10^5$$$, you can calculate the binom in $$$O(a)$$$.

    For number of columns aren't you supposed to get (b-1)*k*(((Fac(n)/(Fac(n-a)*Fac(a)))+1)?

    Worked for me, so I am quite sure it's correct.

    Hello, the comb idea here that I found was about I should calc this C(n, a) which was nearly impossible as we can only linear loop on a not n. but think about n! the one of the above and the (n-a)! the one in the bottom, you can just cancel them and loop through a, by iterating from n-a+1 to n and multiply them together and the last part is just multiply by mod inv of a!

    this was how to deal with the big Combination, the rest of the ideas are also tough, but I just answered what u wanted also have a look at my sol (in the end u will see a solve function)

One of the worst rounds I've participated in in a while. The statements would not load for me first the first 30 minutes on the main website or the mirror website. A and B were boring and uninspired implementation problems. C was fine. But the massive amount of cheaters and the likelihood of the problems being leaked were the final straw.

in C I was trying

$$$ root = \gt root + 1 = \gt .... = \gt root + y - 1 = \gt 1 = \gt 2 = \gt 3 .... $$$

why does this not work? this way root will contribute y times and 1 will contribute n — y times. so we have the equation

$$$ x + y.root = m (x \gt = 1) $$$

$$$ x + y = n $$$

solving this gives

subtract these equations and we get

$$$ y(root - 1) = m - n = \gt root = \frac{m - n}{y} + 1 $$$

why does this not work? Submission

    Because its a more general equation. a*x+b*y = m where a <= b, a,b in range [1,n], if a!=b then x>=1 and y>=1 where root = max(a,b)

    Then tree looks something like this: root — x other nodes b — y other nodes The one extra edge between root and b must not be repeated.

    Your problem with overflow is because of this line:

    ll n=k*(a-1LL)+1LL;

    So n here can be up to 10^10, and then when you calculate parami you can have values up to 10^9*10^10 = 10^19, which is more than long long can handle.

    You should take modulo for n, and then carefully modify parmi calculations to reflect this change.

      well i didn't prove solution like writing it down and trying to prove , but it was kind of apparent that if two or more balls collide their directions will be rearrange so if any ball was pointed toward pockets, either that or some other ball is definitely going into it and we only wanted count and doesn't matter which one goes to the pockets.

      In elastic collisions if two balls of same mass collide then their velocities along the line of collision get interchanged. It's basically asking something like:

      If I fire each ball separately in the mentioned direction from the mentioned starting point, then will the ball go into the pocket or not?

          $$$n = (a - 1) \times k + 1$$$ Since at least one element has frequency $$$\ge a$$$, (say frequency is exactly $$$a$$$), now you can place this number in C(n, a) ways. Now you can repeat this $$$(b - 1)$$$ times, so the number column will be $$$(b - 1) \times C(n, a)$$$ (where there is at least one row where frequency of one element is $$$b - 1$$$) For $$$k$$$ elements total number of colums will be $$$k \times (b - 1) \times C(n, r)$$$ (now there exist a row for every element such that their frequency is $$$b - 1$$$). On adding another column, at least one element will have $$$b$$$ frequency. So $$$m$$$ = $$$k \times (b - 1) \times C(n, a)$$$ + $$$1$$$

        If I understand correctly, you calculated $$$x$$$ as $$$C_n^a$$$.

        In your code, $$$x = \frac{n!}{((a-1)!)^{(k-1)}\cdot a!}$$$. I think it is not equivalent to $$$\frac{n!}{a! \cdot (n - a)!}$$$ because $$$(n-a)!$$$ is not always equal to $$$((a-1)!)^{(k-1)}$$$.

When I submit problem D in about 40 minutes, just check the top 20 leader board and see a bunch of gray, green and cyan users, which was extremely abnormal. (It should be a mixture of red and yellow, purple users instead) I struggle hard to solve E the last 10 minutes and find nearly a thousand users passed E. Totally fucked by AI cheaters.

Unless all cheaters are removed, I will not participate Indian round.

Why did the online judge's output for the sample test case for problem C differ from my output when running locally? https://mirror.codeforces.com/contest/2120/submission/325455524

It seems that my code is outputting this when I submitted during the contest.

-1
3
3 4
4 2
2 1

But when I ran it locally on my machine, it outputs this:

-1
3

Here's my thoughts on A-E:

A: I considered not doing the round after reading this problem, the casework is just annoying :/ And why would you name the variables $$$l$$$ and $$$b$$$? Also, reading $$$l_3 \leq l_2 \leq l_1$$$ gave me a stroke.

B: A really standard trick, especially after the recent Bermuda Triangle div1C (or whatever it was called). The annoying part is showing that you can treat the balls as if they don't collide, but I kinda doubt that 98% of people (including myself) did this.

C: The first decent problem imo. It isn't particularly clever at all, but I think that's fine.

D: Actually very nice!

E: The lack of constraints on $$$\sum a_i$$$ doesn't actually make coming up with the solution much harder, but just makes the implementation kind of painful imo. Didn't enjoy at all.

    I think the constraints in Problem E make it much harder to implement. I have a rough idea of the solution real quick, but I’m struggling to find an easy way to implement it and feeling a bit stuck, kinda annoying.

      Exactly! I had a lot of vague ideas about the implementation, but they were converging into some messy mathematical formulations with a lot of cases. I eventually applied ternary search, I kinda realised that the function was concave upwards.

      Bhai you're right ki I used AI, I admit I used AI but i give instructions to AI to solve according to my logic. Because you also know no AI can solve A to F else you can try next time with AI it wont solve till that level. Agar khud se code likhne bethunga 2 ghante me poora aate hue bhi nei ho payega hope you get the point I dont have any template. In the first one I was understanding the question wrong till the announcement came. Hope you understand and edit your comment as my placements are coming and I don't want a bad impression on my profile. I didn't cheated using AI to write codes fast is not wrong right?

      Thanks!

      Translation for the Hinglish part: I used AI because I couldn't solve A to F all by myself even in a day by myself.

Here, I want to point out that the answer provided to tests for m_ans is calculated using n_ans(n%mod) instead of n i.e. m= C(n_ans,a)*(b-1)*k+1; m_ans=m%mod; But this should be wrong, as n is actual no. of rows and not n%mod;

Lets be honest. The contest wasn't necessarily bad except that E was a bit too standard. D was a very nice problem and the rest were acceptable too in terms of quality.

The only reason people are furious is because of so many cheaters and one of the authors has a skipped contest which has absolutely nothing to do with the quality of the contest. The only valid criticism is to test the authored problems against LLMs which they probably didn't do very well.

Pretty much every contest has cheaters nowadays. Only this time there were many, and people want the contest unrated. Mind you all those commenting about unrating the contest are those who failed to perform well today.

Rev. 4
Vote: I like it 0 Vote: I do not like it

Thanks to the organizers of the competition. Problem F was a very interesting graph theory question, which cleverly transformed a graph theory problem into a 2-SAT problem. Unfortunately, I made an error when comparing adjacency lists during the competition, and couldn't get the limit AC. I quickly solved this issue after the competition.

Regarding AI cheating, I believe that our competition should focus on designing problems that go beyond what AI can solve, rather than concentrating on preventing AI cheating.

  1. Given the increasing strength of AI, preventing AI cheating is actually very difficult. AI not only can solve problems but also imitate code styles. As long as the prompt is well-written, it's hard to judge AI-generated code from its style on a large scale, unless we disconnect the network offline for supervision like ICPC does. However, even ICPC has had cheating scandals (the notorious incident at Ningxia University of Technology, where the organizing team cheated). In short, monitoring and preventing cheating is challenging.

  2. Problems that AI cannot solve are more valuable, and with AI's assistance, the cost of generating this level problems will decrease because you only need to take one extra step compared to AI. As AI becomes more popular and foundational, everyone will increasingly collaborate with AI in their work, and fewer people will need to write code that AI can already generate. When generating problems, we should focus on the questions that AI struggles to solve. This is easy to verify; you just need to run it through the most advanced AI before finalizing the problem. With AI's help, creating problems that are difficult for AI to solve may not be too costly. You just need to design clever reasoning and take one extra step beyond AI's capabilities.

  3. AI still has many weaknesses. Regarding the weaknesses of AI, it is unable to solve problems that require clever reasoning, especially in multimodal problems involving graph theory. Its logic is very weak when dealing with spatial structures. Additionally, for problems involving guessing answers, it struggles with strictly proving solutions, and it performs poorly in these cases as well.

Although AI defeated the world champion Ke Jie in Go, when it comes to programming contest, there is still a significant gap between AI and our world champion like tourist. Therefore, designing problems that surpass AI is still achievable.

      If there are complete and definite rules to found out the players using AI, of course we can ban them. However, what I want to emphasize is that, with the development of AI, this will become increasingly difficult — it's simply a reality.

      My friend used AI to get an orange name. Although it is shameful, it also confirms that the problem of cheating using AI is difficult to solve.

Not a single person in the top 100 gained a double-digit rating. All triple digits — some even skipped the entire Candidate Master range. Unreal contest. Some action should be taken.

People who cheat in contests that ruin the experience for others are an absolute disgrace to their families, the entire programming community, Codeforces, and most importantly, themselves. It's pathetic.

Whoever cheats a single time in a contest should have their account immediately banned on sight.

It's not just that you're cheating. It's that you're ruining the experience of every other contestant whose accomplishments you are taking away from

aryansanghi, you have quite the nerve to even put the name of your school anywhere near your own, let alone your country. You are displaying India in such a poor manner, and your country does not deserve to have its name next to yours.

Anyways, I know cheating is unfortunately quite common here, but why is it that when a cheater organizes a contest there is this obscene amounts of cheating not seen in other contests?

Additionally, calling for the organizers of this contest to have their accounts investigated and banned immediately if they have cheated at any point.

    Additionally, it appears that organizers are suspected of distributing contest problems and solutions before the data of the contest. I feel that this is a grave offense and should not be tolerated whatsoever.

    MikeMirzayanov, please investigate this and take swift action.

Recently, many users have observed a rise in suspicious activity, particularly involving AI-generated solutions during contests.

While a "Report User" button does exist, it's currently limited to users with high ratings. I propose extending this feature to all users, enabling the community to more effectively flag potential abuse.

Suggested Implementation:

  • Add a "Report User" button to every profile.

  • Include a simple form with predefined reasons (e.g., use of AI tools, suspected cheating, etc.).

  • Submitted reports would be reviewed by platform moderators to ensure fair and accurate handling.

Clarification on plagiarism warning for submission 325449557

Hello,

I’d like to explain how I arrived at the exact same “template” code you see in many accepted submissions—completely on my own during the contest. My thought process was:

  1. Problem reduction to combinatorics
    Let N = k * (a – 1) + 1. We need to count ways to choose exactly one position in each of the k blocks, plus the final character. That count is C(N, a).

  2. Modulo setup
    Define MOD = 1e9+7.
    Precompute fact[i] = i! mod MOD and invf[i] = pow(fact[i], MOD–2) mod MOD via Fermat’s Little Theorem.

  3. Compute combination in O(a)
    C(N, a) = (N * (N–1) * … * (N–(a–1))) / a!
    = (∏_{i=0…a–1}(N–i)) * invf[a] (all mod MOD)

  4. Final answer per query
    n = N mod MOD
    m = (C(N, a) * ((b–1) * k) + 1) mod MOD

I implemented my modular-power (and hence the inverse via exponent = MOD–2) exactly as shown in the CP-Algorithms “Binary Exponentiation” tutorial (published long before this contest):
https://cp-algorithms.com/algebra/binary-exp.html
~~~~~ //This standard loop— long long res = 1; while (b > 0) { if (b & 1) res = res * a % MOD; a = a * a % MOD; b >>= 1; } ~~~~~ —explains why my modexp might have matched so many others’ implementations.
I also followed the CP-Algorithms “Binomial Coefficients” article (https://cp-algorithms.com/combinatorics/binomial-coefficients.html, last updated on October 22, 2024) for precomputing fact[] and invf[] and then building C(n, k) in O(1) after O(n) preprocessing. Since that common source predates Codeforces Round 2120, it accounts for why dozens of independent solutions might look nearly identical.
I wrote every line by hand in the contest IDE, tested on custom cases (small and edge values), and never copied any public or peer code. This combination “template” is the only natural O(a + maxA) solution I could see, which is why many of us might have converged on the same implementation.
If it helps, I can paste my fully commented code here or share which custom test cases I ran.
Thank you for reviewing this explanation!
