Is it just my impression, or do Indians always appear on lists of cheaters—and in large numbers at that? What’s more, they even firmly deny it when caught.

I think that it is because there are simply a lot of Indians on Codeforces, so they are going to appear in any list frequently. But CP in India is apparently related to getting jobs, so a perhaps a larger percentage of them cheat. And all cheaters deny cheating.

just take a look at the case of devilshubhra, he got caught cheating and was flexing on linkedin like a CP Motivation Coach — flexing

more flexing

by just searching his name on codeforces and his linkedin — you can also see his previous cheating banned accounts — Shubhra-Awasthi and Shubhra007.

This cheater had the audacity to lecture others about competitive programming. It really is a strange world

Everyone is so afraid of being accused of racism that you will see comments like "no bro, there's just a lot of Indians", seemingly not understanding the concept of per capita and collecting brownie points along the way, making the situation worse.

If we were up to do some digging and address a potential issue, it wouldn't be too hard to find some concrete evidence. For instance, this Codeforces blog showing the disproportionate amount of cheaters among Indians, or the numerous online posts about Indian workers cheating in online interviews (link1, link2).

It's a cultural thing. You can check this post to know more about the whys.

Now, it's not only about cheating. Indians are proportionally way more interested into AI-assisted solving (see the Meta Hacker Cup AI track):

So maybe a lot of them are currently cheating simply because their need for an AI track isn't fulfilled (yet?). At least, let's give credit where credit is due: they could have cheated in the human track but didn't.

Btw, these points are likely valid for Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Well a roughly similar percentage of people of almost every race cheat; It's just that even 1% of Indian population is astronomical.

yk there's an interesting quote about India:

"Everything you say about India, Opposite is also true" :)

It's probably a cultural thing. They want to get ahead of everyone so much that they don't care for the means or morale.

Don't hate the player, hate the game. Its just Goodhart's Law. At some point in India, companies started to use ratings on CP platforms for filtering candidates. Which does not happen in other countries. In US most cs students haven't even heard of CP. They only do leetcode. And for what its worth, candidates in US cheat probably more than Indians in interviews, case in point cluely.ai
