So, you won't believe what went down at my college with Google's hiring event. It's kinda messed up. So, there were these guys who totally rocked the coding challenges and had killer profiles, but guess what? They didn't make the cut for interviews. On the flip side, you had some girls who were struggling big time and didn't even bother with the test, but somehow they snagged interview spots. Like, what's up with Google's diversity drill, like the STEP thing? It's like they're more into balancing guy-girl ratios than actually spotting the real talents.
Don't get me wrong, being diverse is cool, but fairness should be up there too, right? The tech scene needs top-notch talents who can bring fresh ideas to the table. Those dudes who totally aced it shouldn't be kicked to the curb just because they're dudes. It's not a battle of the sexes here, seriously. It's about what's fair and giving credit where it's due. Fair means everyone gets a fair shot based on their skills, not whether they rock a skirt or jeans.
Guess who are downvoting :P
people who are angry at seeing 1e6 job-related blogs being posted on an algorithmic programming website
also, why is OP assuming that hiring by tech companies should be as fair as his dating preferences?
Dude, can you show us at least 1e5 job-related blogs, being posted on an algorithmic programming website?
Dude, I would but my ctrl key doesn't work anymore as I hit it too hard while panic crouching so I can't copy paste links to those 1e5 blogs
As men, we should unite and pledge not to promote this type of beauty contest
Chatgpt posting needs to stop...
Adobe is no.1 simp company i have ever seen,
I had applied at adobe for product intern 22, it's more than a year still my application is pending,
but i encountered that time on LinkedIn out of 10 posts almost 10 are of females that are selected for that role.
Even in 2023 after applying within 4-5 minutes i got rejection mail, girls with 0 exp and low coding skill getting selected and sharing LinkedIn post after joining.
Amazon hired a lot of girls through amazon wow,
Accolite a few days back hired a lot of girls through women in tech hackathon which is only for girls,
Adobe all time simping mode on,
Google now started the same.
I'm literally very much depressed from the beginning of 2023, unable to decide what to do,
really feeling bad for all of us(males).
those company needs sexy employees not skilled candidates.
HARSH TRUTH
should we(males) wear bikini and sit for interview now!!
Stop aiming for such companies doing aggressive diversity hiring. It itself reveals that most likely there will be bad work environment, full of politics.
Almost all companies are forced to maximize diversity hiring to maintain a high ESG score.
I am very sad and i get demotivated after knowing this
Babe wake up, it's that time of the year again
new blog needed saar

Let me add these 2 also :(
Hiring should be based on Skills not Gender!
what if your gender is your skill . The reality is that these companies did not give a fk to your rating and skills. all they need is a alive girl
The world has gone woke. Hope these companies die and become corrupt.
It's really unfortunate that this happens to such a degree. Obviously, the gender-balancing policy has this inevitable side effect (of hiring some number of unskilled people), and that's why companies should restrict and balance this balancing as best as they can.
What I am actually worried about is up until when is such balancing yielding results. Believing that male to female ratio could reach something like a $$$50:50$$$ is not an easy assumption. We're slowly reaching a point in which, women have the same exposure and (possibly) the same opportunities as men in the industry (perhaps this will hold true in the next $$$5$$$ to $$$10$$$ years in the developed countries) and I feel like we are at point in which forcing such balancing does more bad than good. Besides, the balancing, especially at this point in time, should happen naturally and not by forcing specific hiring strategies. If we haven't reached the best balance we can reach it's more due to social stereotypes and misconceptions and should be addressed at this stage, not in the hiring stage.
This does not only apply in our industry. It's an obvious pattern that today's society tries to force gender balancing with wrong methods and in wrong amounts. Lately this has started to get criticized more and more and I feel like there are a lot more people realising this and trying to correct their methods.
Same scenario in my college also, girls having less than 1200 rating gets placed. And boys are just struggling.
I don't think that your CF ranking is directly correlated to your chances of getting hired at tech companies.

Yes, us male competitive programmers are the most oppressed minority in society >:(
The Alphabet company does not owe anyone any "fairness". If you disagree with them, please feel free to start your own company and make hiring a "fair" process for yourself. Until then if you want to feed off the giants you have no say on how they should run their companies. Especially from a random shmuck on the internet who doesn't own any significant chunk of shares in the said company
Hope you understand this.
The Alphabet company and other big tech companies love to use their dominance of the market to deny opportunities to anyone who'd try that. Not to mention you're telling a programmer to become a businessman. Please learn some common sense before posting.
just cause someone's a programmer doesn't mean the world has to bend their knee and take the responsibility of making life fair for them .... no one's born programmer, they learn it ... sane way they can learn business...
You sound like a communist .. probably the kind of guy voting for more free stuff from government all cause you want to put on diapers and be a "programmer"...stop whining like a little baby . . .go out make a difference ... if the big tech use their dominance to deny opportunities that means you don't deserve opportunities ... sorry if you are butt hurt
and you sound like a person who likes to talk big , act arrogant ,tries to insult other people and work less
Better not to get hurt over things which we cannot control. The lesser we can do is keep on grinding.
This is well known, you're one of many who found out. Yes, many tech companies, especially big tech companies, LOVE hiring incompetents who bullshit their way in. Accept that this is the case, develop your skills and connections to avoid working for evil companies and spread the word to others.
avoid working for evil companies
Nailed it.

Let me know if you want a Meta referral.
I would love a Meta referral. I'm an Asian male, so I barely get any interviews. I can barely afford my college tuition, and an internship would completely change my life. I can't even afford two meals a day, and I live in in a 50 square feet room. Thank you.
Send me a DM on CF. I'll get to know you and if I think you'd be a good hire I'll refer you.
I really don't think you should entertain a person that posts blogs like this.
I need :)
You are great !! orz
A bit off-topic, any updates on Hacker Cup 2023?
I think it should not be called coding interviews, It should be called as beauty contest.
many unfair things happen in the world but we have to live a honest life ourselves , unfair things may create hatred inside ourselves , but we cannot let it overtake us. We need to believe in good things and move on.With time we will reach the highest point if we keep working with honesty
can something similar to r/wallstreetbets -> gamestop be done by fellow programmers?
The software companies are not specifically trying to hire chess grandmasters either. Why would they want to prefer competitive programmers when they actually need software developers?
During older Hacker Cup contests, a lot of even experienced competitive programmers found it challenging to compile and test solutions on their own computers. Or couldn't figure out how to configure a larger stack size.
Also a blog like https://mirror.codeforces.com/blog/entry/106662 is a nice demonstration of the fact that software developers and competitive programmers generally don't get along, have different skills, communication habits and priorities.
You always find a way to make the convo SWE vs CP. How is anything you said here even relevant to diversity hiring?
Indeed, these diversity talks are not related to hiring SWEs at all. I apologise for interrupting your women bashing activities.
Yeah, as you said, it isn't. This blog is addressing those candidates who are simply hired without SWE stuff as well.
Please look at the most upvoted and elaborate comments, maybe the blog itself. Most people are angry at the 'COMPANIES' for this kind of hiring, not the 'HIRED CANDIDATES'. I don't see how you see female-bashing in this.
P.S: I don't know about the extremity of diversity hiring practice in the rest of the world, but this blog is pretty much relevant to India, where merit is disrupted too much in the name of simply 'diversity hiring'.
Also, here many companies do hire good competitive programmers, because it does give a measure of their potential to program and develop SWE skills.
Even if they don't, diversity hiring doesn't do any good, as skilled SWE candidates are not hired.
Being good competitive programmers does not necessarily measure their potential to program and develop SWE skills. What makes you think that it does?
Did these girls at least have sufficient coding skills to pass something like the FizzBuzz test? Were there any tests or quizzes, other than competitive programming puzzles? What does "killer profile" actually mean?
Okay, for some CP may, for some it may not, but CP does give a good measure of the person's aptitude.
The initial tests were not 'absolutely' based on CP, but CP skills could help. Along with CP-like questions (more like leetcode, just varying the difficulty), questions regarding computer science fundamentals (like OOPS or data structure design from scratch, DBMS and computer networks for 'systems' profile) were asked.
As for the interviews, the focus is more on Data Structures and Algorithms, OOPS and projects that were done by the student.
By "killer profile", the author means that the student had a good GPA, participated and completed some good projects and had a good rating on some coding platform (Codeforces, CodeChef, etc).
Even if you disregard the last one, it does not make sense to select a girl with a lesser GPA and projects that are not as good, coupled with the fact that the girl did not solve even 1 question completely in the test (and some unselected guys aced the tests), just because she is a girl.
Please don't get me wrong here, I don't mean to sound like girls are incapable of solving problems. There are some girls who did good and nobody has any problem with their selection.
Also, it is not the fault of the candidate for joining the company. For if there were a reverse situation in which I was selected, and 10 girls better than me were not, would I take the intern offer or go on protesting against the company for injustice? Obviously the former...
I do agreee that generalizing that all girls are bad is not right and inherently mysogynistic. for example there are some amazing girls in my year in my college one of them is cm and close to master, which she did in a span of 4 months, now there's no way you could say that she is bad, she's probably better than most(not all) the users in this thread, and yeah she didn't get an offer from google regardless of how amazing she is. So there's that.
But you can't deny that it is unfair, and think about those with who get into firms like JPMC, Amazon, Citi, Google without even being able to solve DIV.3 A's like aHR0cHM6Ly9jb2RlZm9yY2VzLmNvbS9wcm9maWxlL1JpY2hhX2lpdHI= and aHR0cHM6Ly9jb2RlZm9yY2VzLmNvbS9wcm9maWxlL1JlaHBpY18wOA==, aHR0cHM6Ly9jb2RlZm9yY2VzLmNvbS9wcm9maWxlL3Nod2V0YTQwMjU=
are you going to say that somehow the user in the third link is better than the girl I've mentioned in the beginning, and is on the same level as the first user, it's not just diversity the whole hiring sucks right now since it seems like they are rejecting good ones and taking dumb ones as a mission.
I am not saying to hate on this people bcos they are just players, but you can't deny that the way things are working right now is bad.
anks maa
That's where you are wrong kiddo. They did not chose grills over boys. They were never going to take boys in the first place.
Step-HR I'm stuck
It may happen that these companies already got top-notch employees (from any gender) who accomplish the most demanding works. And they are paid very well too. But for tasks lower than that difficulties they are may be looking for some candidates with skills that are not overkill for the job. And with current world trend they also hiring highly or semi highly skilled female developer to maintain the ratio and with lower salary may be. And in IT field already plenty of people available nowadays which was not the case of 10/15 years ago. Salary structure will also be reevaluated. They will only take very high quality candidate from demanding job(from any gender of course). So those who are very highly qualified candidate if I say in term of CF rating greater than 2000 shall focus on pure scientific research which may create new opportunities. The rule is they will only hire a highly paid high quality candidate only if its their necessity. So let not get surprised by these moves of tech company.
Do you have any source on that from the companies themselves? When hiring, you should specify what positions you're hiring for, so your claim should be easily verifiable by looking at job listings.
They were all mass firing people and cancelling big stuff just at the start of this year. People quit all the time for various reasons. Are you trying to say that basically everyone with high skills stayed? Or that they're not looking to expand again and want to stay permanently downsized? Should also be easily verifiable.
No point mentioning all kinds of hypothetical reasons. First eliminate those that lead to contradictions, in this case contradictions with all the behaviour demonstrated by big tech.
You can't just generalize that all girls are bad, for example there are some amazing girls in my year in my college one of them is cm and close to master, which she did in a span of 4 months, now there's no way you could say that she is bad, she's probably better than most(not all) the users in this thread, and she's also one of the few that got selected to the INMO camp in her hs.
But I do agree that it is unfair, and think about those with both Bhim ki shakti and *hut qota, they get into top 5 IITs CSE without even qualifying JEE and then leech off GEN. guys by trapping them, get into firms like JPMC, Amazon, Citi, Google with *hut qota, without even being able to solve DIV.3 A's like aHR0cHM6Ly9jb2RlZm9yY2VzLmNvbS9wcm9maWxlL1JpY2hhX2lpdHI= and aHR0cHM6Ly9jb2RlZm9yY2VzLmNvbS9wcm9maWxlL1JlaHBpY18wOA==, aHR0cHM6Ly9jb2RlZm9yY2VzLmNvbS9wcm9maWxlL3Nod2V0YTQwMjU=, yeh log tho bas. duniya bar bheek se hi jee lethe hai, aur bina sharm ke flex marthe rehthe hai aur ladkon ko bhi tho bas *hut hi chahiye, tho easily trap me pad jathe hai.
But, it is the game that we have to hate imo, not the players.
Although it is not relative, but I also have a bad impression on Google, not because they reject my resume for 9 times regardless I ranked top 500 in code jam, but they just shut down the Google Code Jam and Google Kick Start contest, and they even close the website, not allow others to view it.
If they have financial difficulty, why do they just pause for one year or more? Shutting down means Google are not interested in hosting algorithms competitions anymore. (And thanks SecondThread for continue meta-hacker cup this year, not following google.)
What's worse, they are planning to replace the code interview to just interviewing candidate by their experience and domain knowledge. Yes, I need to remember something like "what is the TCP 3-way handshake process" before entering google.
Google is turning from a company that is interested in discover collecting and educating talented people to a company that just interested in experienced programmers.
Could you share the source for this?
